AIUインターン日記～Daily of internship students from Akita International University～「世界が秋田に追いついてきたね！ 赤羽、秋田の持続可能な生活に触れる。Akita’s life is the cutting edge of the world. Akabane experienced a sustainable life in Akita.」

わらび座は40年以上前から地域の農家と修学旅行生をつないできました。農作業体験をする修学旅行はわらび座が日本で初めて企画したもので、グリーンツーリズムの魁です。私たちインターン生はその実態に迫り、オンラインでも多くの人に農家への旅行を楽しんでもらうための動画を作るため4日間農作業体験を行いました。（企画の詳細はプレスリリースでの発表お楽しみにしてください！）そこで東京出身の私が体験した秋田の農家の持続可能な生活と豊かな生活について、ブログを書きたいと思います。

Warabiza has connected Akita’s farmers and students from all over Japan. The school trip is the lead of eco-tourism, and Warabiza started it for the first time in Japan. We, internship students, experienced farming for four days in order to see the reality of the trip and create videos for the people who cannot visit Akita because of COVID-19. In this blog, I will write about sustainable life in Akita.

私たちが伺った佐々木家は稲作や農業、酪農、ダリア栽培など大規模な農業を行っているお宅でした。私たちはさつまいも掘りや稲刈り、牛の餌やりを手伝わせていただきました。そこで私が驚愕した言葉が題名にもある、「世界が秋田に追いついてきたね！」という言葉でした。

We went to Sasaki san’s farm. They do rice cultivation, dairy farming, and growing flowers such as dahlia. I helped with harvesting rice, sweet potatoes, and feeding the cattle. There, I was surprised to hear Akita’s life is the cutting edge of the world by Sasaki san.

さつまいも掘りをしたとき、そのつるを集める作業がありました。私たちはそれを燃やすのだとてっきり思っていたのですが、それはなんと牛のえさになるのです。ごみを出さない暮らし。まさに、現在世界で叫ばれている持続可能な生活の魁です。日本の農家はあたりまえにやってきたことだけど、世界ではそうした生活はとても珍しいです。日本の里山の暮らしは今注目を集めています。地球にやさしい暮らしをしてきた日本。そう考えると農家の仕事ってすごいですよね。

When we harvested the sweet potato, we collected the vines. We thought they would be burned because they are useless. However, they are actually the feed of the cattle. So, I found that life on the farm is so sustainable. Although the lifestyle was widespread in Japan for a long time, it is very new for other countries. The lifestyle is called “Satoyama,” and it is spotlighted now.

佐々木さんのところでは、人間よりも先に牛がご飯を食べるそう。牛に食べさせてもらっているからね！と笑っていましたが、牛の世話は大変で休む暇がありません。だから、若い人は都会に出てしまったり、親もそれを望んでいるケースも多いそう。佐々木さんになぜ続けられるか聞いてみると、休みなんていらないんだ。自分には農家の仕事があっている。都市で出稼ぎしていろんな職業を経験したけれど、やっぱり農業が一番。上下関係もないし自分の好きに仕事ができるのがとても魅力なんだ。と語ってくださいました。さらに、佐々木さんの息子さんにも話を伺いました。なぜ農家を継ぐことにしたのか聞くと、自分はもともと都市で仕事をしていたがちょうど東日本大震災を経験し家族や故郷を失う人々を目の当たりにした。自分にはそのどちらも残されているのだから、秋田に戻ろう。そう思い家に帰ってきたそうです。

On the farm, humans eat lunch and dinner after cattle have finished eating. Sasaki san said that is because cattle make money for us. However, because raising cattle is so severe, and humans cannot rest, many young people don’t want to be farmers. So, I asked why he can continue working as a farmer. He said because he loves the job and farming is the best job for him. He also said he doesn’t need rest because he chose to live as a farmer. He had experienced many jobs in Tokyo and other cities when he was young as a seasonal worker. However, the relationship with other people was so tiring, and he thought he was a genuine farmer. Thus, he devotes his life to farming.

Moreover, I interviewed his son because he is a new generation. He said he once worked in a city and experienced the Tohoku EarthQuake in 2011. At that time, he saw many people who lost their family, house, hometown, etc. He thought he has all of them now, and he should cherish them. Therefore, he returned to Akita and started farming.

農家をするか、やめるか。私は、それは農家の人だけが抱えている問題ではないと思っています。もし農家がいなくなってしまって食料自給率が下がってしまったら、困るのは私たちです。本当に必要なときに食料が手に入らなくなってしまったら。日本の持続可能で手間暇かけて作る野菜がなくなってしまったら。私は、安心して食べられる日本の野菜が大好きです。なによりも、おいしい。そして、農作業をしているうちに都市で働くより農業のほうがあっているという人も多いのではないかなと思いました。しかし、それを実現するための壁は厚いです。知らない土地で、そこに縁もゆかりもない人が急に農家を始めるのはなかなか難しいことです。まだ具体的な方法は分からないけれど、私もなにかしたいなと思いました。
To be a farmer or not to be. It is a question not only for people born on a farm but also for people all over Japan. Decreasing the population of farming harms Japan and the world. Every citizen in Japan will suffer because of the loss. What if no one makes healthy vegetables in Japan? What if a sustainable lifestyle disappears?
On the other hand, many people are suffering in cities and relationships in the workplace? Some people in cities always ride on crowded trains and suffer from a busy life. I Believe many people can lead a better experience in Akita than where they live now. Now, it is tough for Akita to welcome strangers as new farmers. Thus, I wanted to do something and connect such people to Akita.

また、話しは変わりますが、食用の牛の話が驚きでした。牛は名前もあるし、顔も違う。毎日面倒を見ているから性格だってわかる。だけど、農家として生きていくためには売って食べ物にしなければならない。その苦悩をお聞きしました。もちろん、牛をかわいがる気持ちは大きくて、牛たちがストレスをためないように外に出して広い土地で飼っている。（それは簡単にできることではありません。）だけど、売るときには高く売れてほしいという気持ちにもなる。そうおっしゃっていました。私はそれを聞いて、すごく複雑な気持ちになりました。自分は命に感謝しながらいただきますとごちそうさまを言っていただろうか。命に対して申し訳ない気持ちになりました。そして、全ての食べ物に命があり、それをいただいているんだということをこれからはもっと感じつつ食事をしようと思います。

Moreover, I was surprised by the story of beef cattle. The cattle on the farm have names, and Sasaki san recognizes their face, personality, etc. They take care of them in order to stay comfortably. However, to live as a farmer, they have to sell them for beef. So, when they have to deal with the cattle, they hope to gain huge money. Knowing the story makes me feel complicated and sad. I like beef, and I eat beef. However, I sometimes forget they had lived, and someone raised them. Since I know the reality, I will thank them more.

ご報告です。10/11(日)行われました、国際教養大学の大学祭のミスAIUコンテストで優勝することができました。投票してくださった皆さん、本当にありがとうございました。
今年のミスコンテストは内面の美に焦点を当てたものです。私は、ミスAIUになって少しでも多くの人が私のやっていること、つまり、わらび座と秋田のすばらしさを知ってくれたらいいなと思い参加しました。つまり、ミスAIUになったこれからが私の旅の始まりです。これからももっともっと仕事を楽しんで、発信する力をつけて、頑張ろうと思います。お世話になっている方々にぜひ恩返しがしたいです。

まずはわらび座や秋田の農家のためにチャリティの呼びかけなど何かできないかなと考えております。今後の活動にご期待ください！

Announcement!
I won the grand prize at the Miss AIU contest (miss contest of my university)!!! Thank you for your support. This year, the Miss contest started to reform the contents. Although Miss contests are criticized for reinforcing lookism, AIU tried to improve the competition. Thus, this year, we compete for internal beauty. Because I experience many things in Akita and I love Akita and my university, I want to tell you what I learned for more people. I believe this prize makes my voice heard more. My journey has begun. I am planning to start a charity for Akita and its farmers now. Please check it out.

わらび座は新たな取り組みとして、9月から12月まで、国際教養大学（AIU）の学生2名のインターン生を受け入れています。これは、国際教養大学がコロナウイルス感染拡大防止のため2020年4月から1年間キャンパスや寮が閉鎖されオンライン授業を継続せざるを得ない中、学生の皆様の住居の確保や、社会との新たな出会いの場づくりとして実施されるものです。このブログでは、4か月という限られた期間ですが、インターン生から見た、わらび座・秋田の姿を、日々の仕事を通じて綴っていきたいと思います。

From September to December, Warabiza accepts two internship students from Akita International University. From April 2020, Akita International University closed the campus, and they provide all online courses in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Thus, we think we can help the students by offering accommodations and providing new connections for students and the local community in Akita. Although the period is limited, we will tell you the feelings and the perspectives of the two students for Warabiza and Akita.
